The Boomerang uses cell based location or Matrix where available to provide an initial position via its on board GSM modem.  It wakes up periodically to check for SMS messages from the call centre telling it to turn on its homing beacon.

The signal from the homing beacon is used by the retrieval team's specialist equipment to locate the asset. Since the homing beacon is able to operate anywhere, there is a very high probability that the asset will be recovered.
